The University of Maine at Presque Isle will celebrate the publication of adjunct faculty member Anthony Dolan Scott’s new poetry collection with a reading and book signing with the poet on Wednesday, April 6 at 7 p.m. in the Campus Center. The public is invited to attend this special event, which will include a reception featuring light refreshments, and wine available through a cash bar.
Scott’s new book, The Year Things Came Apart, being released this spring by Maine Authors Publishing, is informed by personal experience, when “a fundamentalist pastor is faced with a series of troubles and is left with the question of what to do with a faith too rigid to heal his grief.”
“When faith informs notions of deity and eternity, that’s one thing,” reads the back cover of the book. “What if faith compels you to put your Florida home on the market and move to northern Maine, to be the pastor of a small but thriving church, and to be nearer family? Then the housing bubble bursts. Then God’s people prove to be fickle people. Then your aging father, a pillar of piety, sins. What do you do with that faith now?”
Dr. Christine Gelineau, Associate Director of Creative Writing at Binghamton University, and also poet and winner of the Pushcart Prize, the Richard Snyder Prize, and Editor’s Choice for Robert McGovern Prize, said this about Scott’s book: “…The Year Things Came Apart… [is] a personal, spiritual, emotional memoir in poetry — and for those of you that the word ‘poetry’ is an obstacle…these poems are power-packed narratives that will appeal to a wide range of readers.”
Scott teaches writing at UMPI and has an M.F.A. from Wilkes University. His poetry and fiction have been published in Echoes magazine, Upcountry literary journal, the Star-Herald, and The Write Life. He finds the rivers and rocks, the dark spruce and white snow, all ideal settings for creating, and plans to spend the rest of his life writing and teaching in Maine.
All are encouraged to attend this special evening with Anthony Dolan Scott. The April 6 event will include a reading and Q&A by the author, followed by a book signing. There will also be a reception featuring light refreshments, and wine available through a cash bar. Copies of The Year Things Came Apart will be on display and for sale during the event.
