The University of Maine at Presque Isle will celebrate the 230th birthday of the signing of the U.S. Constitution by partnering with WUPI 92.1 FM on a Constitution Day radio project on Monday, Sept. 18 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Campus Center. All are invited to take part in this free, interactive event.
Students, faculty, staff, and community members are invited to observe Constitution Day by reading small sections of the U.S. Constitution and sharing what the Constitution means to them. UMPI and WUPI staff will be on hand to record these words and will edit the material into a short Constitution Day radio piece to air later in the week on WUPI. Pocket-sized printed copies of the U.S. Constitution will be distributed during the event.
Congress designated September 17 as Constitution Day – a national celebration of our country’s founding document – to commemorate the Sept. 17, 1787, signing of the Constitution. In 2004, Congress passed a spending bill that included a provision requiring every school and college that receives federal money to teach about the Constitution on Sept. 17, with a grace period should that day fall on a weekend or conflict with established schedules.
“We at WUPI are pleased to be partnering up with the University of Maine at Presque Isle this Constitution Day,” WUPI Radio Station Manager Katharine Waldron said, “and we’re looking forward to sharing the results of our radio project with the campus and community.”
