Terrorist Acts in New Zealand; Our Commitment to Safety for Every Individual

Published:

Dear UMPI Students, Friends, and Colleagues,

We witness far too much tragedy as a result of violent human actions in our world, both at home and abroad– in our own communities and those far removed.  The violence visited upon the worshippers at mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand today is but the latest international example of indiscriminate, yet premeditated, murder that takes the lives of men, women, and children who have in common the horrific misfortune of being in a specific place at a specific time.

At the core of my moral values is the belief that intolerance anywhere leads to the possibility of violence everywhere.  Although as individuals our values are (rightfully) diverse, I know we share a common belief in compassion and love for our fellows.  Indeed, our solidarity in this belief should always be the heart and soul of any educational community.

We all remain dedicated to making this university a stronger and safer one for us all.  The strength of our solidarity, I am convinced, will in turn positively impact the world around us.  For we are truly *all* connected; acts of intolerance resonate outward in ways we cannot imagine, just as acts of love, kindness and compassion impact those whose lives are far removed from our own.

If you yourself, or anyone you know, needs any assistance, please do not hesitate to contact my office directly (768-9525 or through my email) or that of the Dean of Students (768-9404; vanessa.pearson@maine.edu).  Counseling, for oneself or referring another, is available through our UMPI Counselor, Ralph McPherson (768-9791; ralph.mcpherson@maine.edu).
