At the University of Maine at Presque Isle, we believe in the importance of standing together. Civil discourse, greater understanding of other cultures, safe spaces, and ensuring all voices are heard–these are all important to our campus.
In Fall 2016, UMPI leadership established an Inclusion and Civility Task Force. Its purpose? To foster inclusion and civility at UMPI in ways that embrace diversity, create solidarity, encourage civil discourse and respect for others, and increase a general feeling of safety on campus.
The group kicked off its efforts with Stand Together Week in March 2017. A pledge was created reflecting our campus values and all were invited to sign a six-foot-high version of it to show their commitment to inclusion, civility, and their fellow Owls. There is always the opportunity to virtually sign the Pledge.
Work is underway to transition the task force into a longer-term Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Council.
