Watch: Food Coping Strategies During COVID-19 and Beyond

Dr. Tara Whiton is an Assistant Professor of Community Health in the Health Administration Department at the University of Maine at Presque Isle. Since the COVID-19 pandemic that began in March 2020, many Mainers struggled with the ways they normally engage with and have access to our food systems. Many Maine people have adopted “food coping strategies”, or coping strategy mechanisms that deal with short-term insufficiency of food. Dr. Whiton will discuss some of the ways in which Maine people have coped with food insufficiencies and why this is important information for further education and outreach about food safety and health when faced with resource constraints.

If you have questions related to Dr. Whiton’s presentation you can connect with her here.

Dr. Chunzeng Wang is a professor in Earth and Environmental Sciences at the University of Maine at Presque Isle with expertise in geology and GIS. One week after the first COVID-19 case was officially reported by Maine CDC on March 12, 2020, Dr. Wang rolled out UMPI’s version of the Maine COVID-19 daily situation map on popular social media and it soon received widespread attention and attracted tens of thousands of users every day, including medical professionals, government agencies, and the general public. It is widely considered as an excellent community service from a public university. Dr. Wang will talk about why and how he started this project and the impact of the project.
