OAPI hosts series of fall adventures

Think late fall is a time to bundle up and start getting ready to sit out the winter? Think again. The University’s Outdoor Adventure Program International (OAPI) is offering a series of late fall adventures for campus and community members to enjoy, including rock climbing, backpacking and caving trips.The fun starts Saturday, Nov. 8 with a rock climbing day trip to Clifton, Maine (rain date is Nov. 9). The group will depart from Gentile Hall at 5:30 a.m. and will return to Presque Isle by 10 p.m. No experience is required. OAPI will provide transportation, climbing equipment and a certified climbing instructor. Cost is $30 for students, $40 for non-students.

On Friday to Sunday, Nov. 14-16, OAPI will lead a Backpacking in the Bigelows trip. The base camp-style adventure will include sleeping in canvas wall tents and going on day hikes Saturday and Sunday. The group will depart from Gentile Hall at Noon on Friday and return to Presque Isle by 9 p.m. on Sunday. No experience is required. OAPI will provide transportation, food, and group gear. Cost is $60 for students, $85 for non-students.

On Friday, Nov. 21, OAPI will offer a Whitewater Kayak Roll Clinic from 1:30 to 4 p.m. in the Gentile Hall pool. No experience is required. OAPI will provide kayaks, spray skirts, paddles, lifejackets and instruction. This event is FREE for Gentile Hall members and UMPI students, $7 for non-members.

The next day, Saturday, Nov. 22, OAPI will lead a Caving in Quebec trip. The group will depart from Gentile Hall at 7 a.m. and return to Presque Isle by 8 p.m. No experience is required. OAPI will provide transportation, snacks and helmets. Cost is $25 for students, $40 for non-students.

Finally, OAPI will attend a Bouldering Bash in Orono on Saturday, Dec. 6. The group will depart from Gentile Hall at 5:15 a.m. and return to Presque Isle by 7:30 p.m. No experience is required.
