Youth Triathlon set for UMPI September 7

Anticipation is building for the 2014 REDY…Set…Let’s Go! Youth Triathlon as the on-line registration site is live for the third annual event aimed at getting kids to be more active.

The youth triathlon, a collaboration of TAMC, Aroostook County Action Program’s (ACAP) Healthy Aroostook, and the University of Maine at Presque Isle, can accommodate over 100 children.

Local couple presents major gift to support auditorium, cultural arts

The University of Maine at Presque Isle is pleased to announce that a local couple has stepped forward with a major gift to assist the campus in its efforts to promote the cultural arts in Aroostook County and to serve as a cultural hub for the region.

Ray and Sandy Gauvin of Mapleton, well-known for their many County endeavors including the Aroostook Aspirations Initiative, have gifted the University a 75-acre woodlot and building located at 640 State Road in Mapleton. The couple also is donating all of its maple syrup production equipment to the University.

Reed Gallery presents Bachelor of Fine Arts Exhibition

The University of Maine at Presque Isle’s Reed Fine Art Gallery presents the 2014 Bachelor of Fine Arts Exhibition, featuring selected works created by five graduating UMPI art students, through August 17.

The Reed Fine Art Gallery has presented a Senior Thesis Exhibition each year for the last seven years as an opportunity for young and upcoming artists in northern Maine to showcase their work to the public and to provide a forum for them to discuss their art.

Husson, UMPI sign 4+1 agreements that increase transferability

Officials with the University of Maine at Presque Isle and Husson University held a signing ceremony on Wednesday, Aug. 13, in UMPI’s Alumni Room, finalizing two articulation agreements that increase transferability for UMPI students who want to continue their education in two of Husson’s master’s degree programs—its Master of Science in Criminal Justice Administration and its Master of Business Administration.

Wintergreen, UMPI present northern Maine’s second annual color-filled 5K

The University of Maine at Presque Isle and the Wintergreen Arts Center are teaming up to present one of The County’s most unique and fun-filled 5K fundraisers—the Second Annual Color Presque Isle 5K, where participants dress in white and get showered with colored powder throughout the course. The event, which serves as a benefit for arts programming in downtown Presque Isle, will be held on Saturday, Aug. 30 at 9 a.m. starting at Riverside Park. Registration begins at 8 a.m.

UMPI receives $50,000 National Endowment for the Arts grant

University is one of 66 Our Town projects selected nationwide for arts-based community development investment

The University of Maine at Presque Isle has been awarded a $50,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Arts to assist in the creation of the region’s very first facility dedicated to the visual arts. The University has been working with the Wintergreen Arts Center, the City of Presque Isle, building owners, and several other partners to transform 149 State Street into the Northern Maine Center for the Cultural Arts.

UMPI one of 20 network members helping to shape national conversation on Competency-Based Education

Officials with the University of Maine at Presque are working with the nation’s top Competency-Based Education leaders—to establish shared guiding principles for the learning approach and offer recommendations that will help other institutions develop competency-based degree programs of their own—after being selected as one of only 20 institutions nationwide to participate in the Competency-Based Education Network [C-BEN].

UMPI students promote EMMC Acute Rehab unit

Two University of Maine at Presque Isle students were able to get real-world experience creating promotional materials for a hospital-based rehabilitation unit in Bangor, Maine, and have that unit use their work, as part of their fieldwork practicum in Professional Communication and Journalism.
