UMPI Professor Kevin McCartney reflects on Fulbright Award

University of Maine at Presque Isle Professor Kevin McCartney is an official Fulbright alumnus after spending nearly nine months in Szczecin, Poland as the very first Fulbright Scholar from northern Maine. During his Fulbright, McCartney undertook two large and several smaller studies connected to his research in the field of micropaleontology, delivered presentations in several Polish cities, taught a geology course, assisted student and faculty colleagues in writing English-language papers and grant proposals, and even named a new species in honor of his benefactor William Fulbright.

UMPI biology student receives major research fellowship

Lydia Tilley, a University of Maine at Presque Isle freshman majoring in medical laboratory technology and biology, has received a prestigious national award that will allow her to conduct important research this summer and scholarly work during the next year—Tilley was awarded a 2017 American Society for Microbiology Undergraduate Summer Research Fellowship.

UMPI hosts statewide conference on drone usage in agriculture and forestry

More than 70 people including Geographic Information Systems specialists, foresters, farmers, agronomists, soil scientists and college students came together for a special event put on by the Maine GIS User Group [MEGUG] on Friday, June 16 at the University of Maine at Presque Isle to learn about “Applications of UAVs/Drones and LiDAR in Agriculture and Forestry.”

UMPI alumna presents playwriting masterclass for children

Darci Faye, a recent graduate of the University of Maine at Presque Isle and director/founder of Broadway Kids in The County, is hosting an exciting opportunity for Aroostook County children who are aspiring playwrights and theater enthusiasts. Presque Isle native and acclaimed playwright John Cariani will teach a Playwriting Masterclass on Sunday, June 25, at the Aroostook Centre Mall in Presque Isle, in the former FYE store space.

University announces 2017 graduates

One hundred and seventy-nine students graduated from the University of Maine at Presque Isle during the 2016-2017 academic year. On Saturday, May 13, during the 2017 Commencement Exercises, the University’s 108th Commencement, President Ray Rice conferred degrees upon 125 students who participated in the ceremony held in Wieden Gymnasium.

Aroostook Youth Triathlon set for Saturday, June 17

An event designed for young athletes who enjoy swimming, biking, and running is approaching. The Aroostook Youth Triathlon will be held on the campus of the University of Maine at Presque Isle. The triathlon, presented by The Aroostook Medical Center, UMPI, SAD#1 Adult Education and University Credit Union, is scheduled for Saturday, June 17.

UMPI, Houlton Center co-sponsor car in soap box derby

For the first time, the University of Maine at Presque Isle and Houlton Higher Education Center are taking part in the exciting world of soap box racing. The University and its Houlton campus will co-sponsor a car in the annual Northern Maine Soap Box Derby race on Saturday, June 17 at Houlton’s Community Park.

UMPI student, MMG Insurance receive Maine Campus Compact Awards

A University of Maine at Presque Isle student and a locally-headquartered insurance company that partners closely with the University on workforce development efforts were honored recently during the Maine Campus Compact Awards as part of the coalition’s annual awards ceremony held in Portland on April 26. Alexandra DesRuisseaux received the Heart and Soul Student Award and MMG Insurance was honored with the inaugural Corporate Partner of the Year Award.
