Maine Arts Commission grant helps students explore maps

From map art to altered globes, students in Pam Crawford’s Personal Geographies class explored all sorts of terrain thanks to a grant the University of Maine at Presque Isle received from the Maine Arts Commission as part of the commission’s Creative Aging Program. Final projects from the class are on display in UMPI’s Center for Innovative Learning through Sept. 14.

UMPI presents Salmagundi Film Series

To complement its Distinguished Lecturer Series and other cultural events it hosts during the school year, the University of Maine at Presque Isle has established the Salmagundi Film Series, with a screening and conversation about the film to take place every second Tuesday of the month at 6 p.m. in the Auditorium in Wieden Hall. Film series dates for the Fall 2018 semester are Sept. 11, Oct. 9, Nov. 13, and Dec. 11. All are invited to attend these free screenings, though films may not be appropriate for younger viewers.

Reed Art Gallery presents Jeanne Wells exhibit

The University of Maine at Presque Isle’s Reed Art Gallery will present Odes and Alliterations, photo-works 2003-2018 by Jeanne Wells, from Aug. 27 through Oct. 12, 2018. The public is invited to view the exhibition throughout the show’s run and attend the Gallery Reception on Friday, Sept. 7, from 5-7 p.m., which includes a talk with the artist at 5:30 p.m.; light refreshments will be served. This reception is being held in conjunction with the First Friday Art Walk. The Reed Gallery is located on the second floor of the University’s Center for Innovative Learning.

Gentile Hall offers Week of Wellness Sept. 10-13

The staff at the University of Maine at Presque Isle’s health and wellness facility are kicking off the academic year with a Wellness Week, to be held from Monday, Sept. 10 to Thursday, Sept. 13, and campus and community members of all ages are invited to take part in fun and free activities focused on healthy living.

SAGE announces Fall kick-off

Seniors Achieving Greater Education [SAGE]—a special program of the University of Maine at Presque Isle that serves local residents over 50 and believes in “learning for life”—will host its Fall Kick-off event from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 7 in the Campus Center Multi-Purpose Room. The kick-off includes lunch at 11:30 a.m., the introduction of courses, and door prizes, and is open to all; cost is $5 for those who RSVP by Sept. 1, $7.50 at the door.

Campus and community leaders are lauding the Legislature and Governor Paul R. LePage for supporting a $49 million investment in the University of Maine System’s workforce development infrastructure that voters will be asked to approve this fall.

UMPI’s Foundation hosts Backyard Getaway Tour fundraiser

Tour some of the County’s best backyard escapes when the Foundation of the University at Presque Isle hosts its first ever Backyard Getaway Tour on Saturday, Aug. 25, from Noon to 3:30 p.m. This rain or shine fundraiser for the Zillman Family Greenhouse offers tours of seven “seriously awesome backyard escapes” in the Presque Isle area, including garden houses, a stand-alone man cave, and a live-in tree house. Tickets are $20 each, $30 for VIP tickets, and free for children under 12; all tour-goers will receive a Backyard Getaway wrist band that serves as their admission to the tour stops.
