Internationally recognized nutrition expert serves as DLS speaker

The University of Maine at Presque Isle, in partnership with Cary Medical Center and the Siruno Stroke Education Center, will present Dr. Joel Fuhrman—the best-selling author and internationally recognized expert on nutrition and natural healing—as the next speaker in its 2014-2015 Distinguished Lecturer Series. Dr. Fuhrman will deliver his talk on Preventing and Reversing Disease through Nutritional and Natural Methods on Thursday, Nov. 6, at 7 p.m. in the Campus Center. His talk is free and the public is invited to be a part of this special evening.

Central Aroostook Rotary clubs, UMPI present 3rd annual World Polio Day

Purple Pinkie Project to raise funds for polio eradication

The University of Maine at Presque Isle and the Presque Isle Rotary Club are joining forces to host their Third Annual World Polio Day and Purple Pinkie Project celebration and this year, with the help of the Rotary Clubs in Caribou, Fort Fairfield, Limestone and Washburn, the celebration is going to spread throughout central Aroostook County. A slate of activities will take place between Oct. 18 and Oct. 26 to celebrate World Polio Day, which takes place Oct. 24. All activities are meant to raise awareness of Rotary International’s efforts to eradicate polio worldwide and to raise money — $1 at a time – to go toward that global effort.

University hosts annual fall blood drive

In conjunction with the American Red Cross, the University of Maine at Presque Isle will hold its annual fall blood drive on Monday, Oct. 27. The drive will run from Noon until 5 p.m. in the Campus Center’s Multi-Purpose Room. Door prizes will be given away during this time. Members of the campus and community are invited and encouraged to participate in this free event.

UMPI’s Reed Fine Art Gallery presents Caponigro exhibit

The University of Maine at Presque Isle’s Reed Fine Art Gallery will present Antarctica by world-renowned photographer John Paul Caponigro from Oct. 20 through Nov. 30, 2014. The public is invited to view the exhibition throughout the show’s run and attend the Opening Reception and Book Signing on Oct. 21 from 5:30-6:45 p.m., which is being held in conjunction with Caponigro’s Distinguished Lecturer presentation at 7 p.m. in the Campus Center.

UMPI, Hope and Justice Project host Take Back the Night event

In partnership with Hope and Justice Project, the University of Maine at Presque Isle will host a Take Back the Night event, which will include a survivor speak-out and candlelight vigil, on Wednesday, Oct. 8, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in the Campus Center Multi-Purpose Room. The community is invited to attend and be a part of this important event.

Digital media master John Paul Caponigro to give DLS talk

The University of Maine at Presque Isle is pleased to announce that John Paul Caponigro, a world renowned master of digital printing and photography, will serve as the next speaker in its 2014-2015 Distinguished Lecturer Series. Presented by Canon USA’s Explorer of Light program, Caponigro will deliver his talk Antarctica on Tuesday, Oct. 21 at 7 p.m. in the Campus Center. His talk is free and the public is invited to be a part of this special evening.

NMCC, UMPI host 1st annual Food Fight

Students, faculty and staff at the University of Maine at Presque Isle and Northern Maine Community College are participating in a “food fight” like no other in honor of Hunger Action Month. The institutions challenged each other to their 1st Annual Food Fight—a food drive being held between Sept. 19 and Oct. 3—to help stock the shelves at local food pantries.

UMPI students present 20th semi-annual Fit and Fun Day

Local kids are invited to join the Physical Education majors from the University of Maine at Presque Isle for the 20th semi-annual Fit and Fun Day. Activities will take place from 10 a.m. to Noon on Saturday, Oct. 18, at UMPI’s Gentile Hall. Free registration begins at 9 a.m., with games and activities to follow.

UMPI hosts Science Lunchtime Seminar Series

Two academic programs at the University of Maine at Presque Isle are again joining forces this fall to provide the campus and community with an innovative way to explore the world of science. The Environmental Studies and Sustainability and the Biology programs are hosting a lunchtime seminar series that will provide a forum to present scientific research conducted by UMPI students and faculty as well as other local and regional scientists.
