8/30/2021 – Message from President Rice to students

Dear UMPI Students,

An important reminder as we begin the first day of the Fall 2021 semester.  We have asked that in order to be eligible to participate in on-campus experiences, both in Presque Isle and at the Houlton Center, that all students indicate that they have initiated the process to become fully vaccinated, or submit an exemption (UMPI provides for medical, religious, and online-only exemptions).  You can enter this information at https://umaineportal.pointnclick.com.  We greatly appreciate the efforts of all of those who have done so.  In addition, we will have help/information tables set up at UMPI and the Houlton Center on Monday and Tuesday to assist those who may need to complete this process.

We recognize that these are important decisions for each individual, so we encourage you to talk to your advisor or a member of UMPI’s student support team, along with your medical provider, if you have any questions or concerns.

Two other important things to keep in mind as we start classes today. Those still completing their vaccination verification or who have exempted status must participate in weekly asymptomatic testing. Others are encouraged to take part in voluntary weekly testing. The Testing Center is located at the MMG Center. For more details and the testing calendar, visit https://newsite.umpi.edu/return/covid-19-testing/.

In addition, face coverings are required on campus while indoors. Exceptions include:

  • When a person is alone in an office, dormitory, or other room with a closed door;
  • When eating or drinking in a space where eating or drinking is permitted;
  • When a medical accommodation has been granted by appropriate University officials;
  • In other special circumstances as determined and notified by UMPI leadership.

Face coverings are not required of any student, faculty, staff member, or visitor while outdoors on university property. However, face coverings are strongly recommended outdoors when physical distancing is difficult or when large groups are involved.

We are truly grateful for all the efforts being undertaken to ensure everyone’s health and safety. Should you have any questions about the vaccination requirement, testing, or masking, please contact Fred Thomas, Director of Safety and Security, at 207-768-9580 or frederick.thomas@maine.edu.
