Dear UMPI Students,
As we head into the weekend and prepare for the first week of classes, I wanted to reiterate a message you may have seen already concerning vaccination, testing, and masking. Chancellor Malloy shared a message in early August announcing the University of Maine System’s vaccination requirement plan. As part of that plan, students had to begin the process to become fully vaccinated by Aug. 20, or submit an exemption (UMPI provides for medical, religious, and online-only exemptions) in order to remain eligible to participate in on-campus experiences.
We appreciate the efforts of every student who has done so. As a reminder to all students, you should only plan to participate in on-campus experiences at UMPI and the Houlton Center if you have begun the process to become fully vaccinated or applied for a medical or religious exemption, and entered your information at https://umaineportal.pointnclick.com.
We recognize that these are important decisions for each individual, so we encourage you to talk to your advisor or a member of UMPI’s student support team, along with your medical provider, if you have any questions or concerns.
Two other important things to keep in mind as we go back to school. Those still completing their vaccination verification or who have exempted status must participate in weekly asymptomatic testing. Others are encouraged to take part in voluntary weekly testing. The Testing Center is located at the MMG Center. For more details and the testing calendar, visit https://newsite.umpi.edu/return/covid-19-testing/.
In addition, face coverings are required on campus while indoors. Exceptions include:
- When a person is alone in an office, dormitory, or other room with a closed door;
- When eating or drinking in a space where eating or drinking is permitted;
- When a medical accommodation has been granted by appropriate University officials;
- In other special circumstances as determined and notified by UMPI leadership.
We are truly grateful for all the efforts being undertaken to ensure everyone’s health and safety. Should you have any questions about the vaccination requirement, testing, or masking, please contact Fred Thomas, Director of Safety and Security, at 207-768-9580 or frederick.thomas@maine.edu.
